FRIDAY PANEL POST!!

KIWIMANCOMICS The  latest panel is a panel within a panel, metatastic!
KIWMANCOMICS

Pictures from the Armageddon! The NZCC stall did very well over Labour weekend, outdoing the total take from last year in one weekend is a bit of a feat! Combined with sales from other NZCC stalls from throughout this past year the take is triple that of 2009! WOW!
More pics at the NZCC blog
But what is the NZCC you ask?
The NZCC is a volunteer group of NZ comics creators who have banded together to generate opportunities for the promotion and sale of NZ comics and zines.
NZCC's primary focus is selling comics on behalf of their creators at the three New Zealand Armageddon Expos and at other events such as Zinefests and craft markets. We also have an agreement to supply comics to selected comic shops, libraries and art galleries. Any comics or zine makers who are New Zealanders, or are currently based in New Zealand are welcome to join. There are no membership fees. To cover operating costs NZCC retains a 10% commission from all comics sold.
Waterfall display stands, attractive posters and some really wide ranging material on offer helped the wonderful volunteers to pull of a real sales coup!

 Have a great weekend Kiwimaniacs!!!

Extree!! Extree!! Latest strip panel up at Kiwimancomics!

Snippet of latest panel!
Go get you some Kiwiman!

Well it's the Friday before Armageddon!
What's Armageddon? No, no it's not the end of the world, or actually maybe it is... but anyway this is what the Armageddon website has to say about itself.
"Taking the entire ASB Showground’s in Greenlane, the event will cover all six halls, the Logan Campbell centre and a huge outside area, with wall to wall events, entertainment, activities and fun from 9am to 6pm all three days of Labour weekend (October 23-25th)."{sic}

Best of all comics featuring KIWIMAN will be on sale! Gotham Comics stand will be selling copies of NewGround, a NZ comics anthology. The 3 part story "KIWIMAN: Crossover on Finite Islands" was printed in NewGround #9, #11A, and #12! So go ahead and treat yourself to some Kiwiman goodness!

Also at the convention, the NZCC , the New Zealand Comics Creators group that sells NZ comics for NZ creators at Armageddon on their own table. Lots of handtooled comics covering a vast range of artistic and literary styles!! The NZCC serves as both a great centrepoint for buying NZ comics and an amazing survey of the talents and stories being told in this very creative medium!

Till next we post
ciao!

Panel Ho!

The Latest Panel is up at kiwimancomics.com
The latest penl is waiting for you at KIWIMANCOMICS.COM!!

Well it's Friday again! This month of  course the Auckland NZ comic and pop culture convention Armageddon
In some patient news, Kiwiman publisher DMC (associated with Gotham Comics ) confirmed today that they will not be releasing any new issue at this month's convention. The continuing downturn in econimic prospects is ultimately behind the hold up, advertisers have been hit hard by the recession. DMC has several issues planned as they have a well stocked backlogue of material.

Cover to NewGround # 12 art by Jared Lane

The last time DMC were in a position to release their last book was in October 2009 with issue 12. That issue contained the final chapter of the three part KIWIMAN story, "Crossover on Finite Islands", and boasted the best production values of the series so far with great paper grades and fantastic printing. Kudos to Jeremy and his team at DMC comics and here's to better days in the near future! DMC hopes to issue it's (unlucky for some) number 13 next year at the Wellington Expo in April (9/10th) 2011 at the TSB Bank Arena.

Pages 1 and 2 of the KIWIMAN story in NewGround 12
A new 5 page Kiwiman story had been received by DMC but as yet has not been confirmed for publication in any of the issue slated for future publication. Though the story may instead run as a featured extra on KIWIMANCOMICS.COM

Lastly this! The NZCC (New Zealand Comics Collective) Auckland division collected art from various NZ comic makers to make the promo-poster bellow.

NZCC promo poster, art by various, graphic design by Lee-Yan Marquez (auteur of The Imposter)

The NZCC will have a stall selling NZ comics from NZ comics makers from all over the (world?) country at the pulp culture convention. This stall is very handy for folks making comics in NZ to meet up at and to have their comics sold. The deal is that the NZCC will display and sell on behalf of anyone who sends them their work, taking 10 percent commision towards costs and expenses. Generally once a certain threshold of earnings has been met (I think it's about $10.00) then the contributor is paid out.

Friday 17th panl posted

Friday already! It's been a busy couple of days for me, so the post went up a bit late. But better late than never!

The image advertising today's strip panel is NOT the strip panel at all!!

In a shocking twist I am using an image from an unrelated story that may be picked up for publication this year by the publishing wing of Gotham Comics, DMC.

DMC has been publishing comics for over 6 years now, they usually try to publish on a bi-anual schedule. The costs for printing and distribution are handled by Gotham Comics owner, Jeremy Bishop who offsets some of those costs by gaining advertisers who pay for space (no mean feet in this economic climate).

There are good links to DMC and Gotham Comics available from the KIWIMANCOMICS website, go seek them out for more info on these very worthy anthology comics!

But not before you peek in on Kiwiman's doings in this weeks panel delivery!

Warning: all the links on this page will take you to kiwimancomics.com, I have no idea what the Guinness World Record is for most links to a single webpage in one post are but this is a personal best for me.

till next we electrically meet

First of Spring!!

Latest panel is up and it's the first one of Spring! In the southern hemisphere of course. Autumn or Fall to everybody up in the north and to those in the middle, how's that heat - huh?
That's the weather out of the way.

Currently I am working on a piece that is part-comic-part-poem, written by Liv Macassey ( you can see some of her poetry over on her webpage, www.macassey.com ).
Liv wrote the script and the text so it's an interesting hybrid.

I am working with ink wash on that piece which means I am learning several things at once, namely collaboration and ink wash.

We hope to send the piece off to Landfall or some other worthy NZ lit' mag' for publication. I'll keep you posted on that story as it develops.

Also if you have any graphic work you need done I am looking for paid work to keep a roof over me head. Drop me a comment if you've any promising leads!

Cheers for dropping by!

FRIDAY THE 13TH PART ONE!

Hey y'all!
The latest panel has been posted over at www.kiwimancomics.com
continuing our most parallel narrative so far!!!
Will Rhonda R. Rearson evade capture and reveal Kiwiman's
secret persona to the world? Or will the Collector's plans to auction Kiwiman's secret persona to the highest bidder succeed first? Or will Anton McGreedy's plan to escape the lethal interests of The Smuggler by breaking Kiwiman out of captivity and relying on the Wingless Wonder to rescue him from the Collector's remote pacific island work first? And what about Kiwiman's plans to round them all up and arrest them in the name of saving endangered species of Aotearoa New Zealand?
Oh it's all so complex!

OTHER THINGS!
Wellingtonionians have the opportunity to discover a marvelous underground art dimension ! Mygalaxi Gallery holds a monthly underground art market, serving as a venue for affordable, original art work from local artists.
The next market is Saturday and Sunday 21-22 August.
MYGALAXI ART MARKET #3 at Basement, 39 Dixon St
Saturday 21st & Sunday 22nd August 2010 - 11am-5am both days
Check out the website for more info.
www.mygalaxi.co.nz

Don't forget to tell art lover people you know about it so that they can help support local artists!

THAT LIBRARY COMPETITION I ENTERED

Well my submission was officially accepted and is now in the running to earn me a prize!
Meanwhile, it looks like the only entry so far this week, David Tulloch's Fumeti or 'photograph-comic' of lego people, is probably going to take out this weeks division as there is no other contender. The competition does not seem to attract much competition - which is of course ironic. But I found the latest entry amusing and thought it was taking the story - such that it is - in a funny new direction! Let's hope people keep the thing going!

Allright Kiwimaniacs!
Till next post,
"Let's be careful out there'.

Kiwiman delivery!! What's on, shows and comps.

Latest strip has been posted over at Kiwimancomics!

I have not yet blogged here outside of the Friday Kiwimancomics strip posts, which is a bit sad of me because I've been doing other stuff and I could have blogged about it. Mea culpa.

Anyway at least it gives me somethings to talk about other than the latest strip here today!

To wit...

Library Graphic Novel Competition I've entered this competition, here's a panel of fully coloured comic strip in a different style. It has been suggested to me that it is a more commercial looking style than the stuff I usually put up at www.kiwimancomics.com, the competition works as follows, each week artists can submit four panels that continue on from the last week's winner. The winner is chosen from all the entries, however as of this writing there has been no other entry for the week, of course anything could change between now and Monday, but I guess if nobody else puts up an entry before Monday morning they'll take my entry to be the week's winning one.
It has been suggested to me that this is a more commercial looking style than the stuff I usually put up at www.kiwimancomics.com.
It did this in about 3 (tiring) days and was trying to sort of fit it in (in terms of style) to what had gone before.

As for shows, Clair Harris (creator of the "True Lives" fumetti comics) and Jess Johnson (who has a lovely little comic strip piece in Pictozine 2) both have work in the New Artists exhibition "Knowing You, Knowing Me: New Artists Show 2010 10 July - 21 August" in the Artspace gallery in Auckland city.

Also in Auckland, Titus Books' publishing of Mike Johnston's latest book, "Travesty", was launched last night, the book contains illustrations by Daren Sheehan of the Sheehan bros. (who completed their latest comic series "The Inhabitants" last year).

Lots of stuff going on in our cherished isles!
I'll try to keep you posted!
Big Love

Kiwi Strip for this week! And Linxes!

Good Friday to you all (even if it isn't one!), The exciting latest installment has been posted on the astounding Kiwimancomics website! so head along for you're latest fix by clicking the image to the right. We've made some changes to the archived strips, they are now presented in units (generally as 4 panel strips) which is how the were (mostly) formulated and created originally.

Besides that great and astounding news I'd like to share a few links with you, purely for your edification and entertainment.

First off, Dodgem Logic, Alan Moore's underground magazine, up to number 4 already and 5 is due to ship out from the 16th of August. In addition to a pretty crazy and exciting website there are quite amusing youtube vids of Alan Moore blowing his interviewer's mind, talking up the magazine. What an amusing rogue!

But that's not all! Now for some New Zealand links about last weekend's Comic Con in San Diego!

First up Roger Langridge blogged on his website Hotel Fred about his adventures at the Convention, where he was hosted by Boom! studios for whom he has been making The Muppet Show comic book!

But that's not all!!! Over at Adrian Kinnaird's blog From Earth's End he's been keeping tabs on the kiwi connection to comic con, recently he's posted on an exhibition of Temuera Morrison's SPFX appliance make up from the forth-coming Green Lantern movie; Rumours that Karl Urban is to play Judge Dredd in that forth-coming film and of course the interview with another local boy, Richard Fairgray and the launching of the legally blind comic maker's 'Blastosaurus' which linked to in my last post.

Well, I'd like to wish a very warm hello to all my followers (that's you Dave you little cherub!) and a hearty 'keep coming back' to you all! I'll be adding some interesting pictures of my other work over the coming week, and there'll be another post about the latest Kiwiman strip on Friday a week from now.

Till then keep smiling!

Matt.

Latest Strip, Some News, & A Story Board

Posted this morning: the latest Kiwiman comic strip! Go to kiwimancomics.com to check it out!!
Please post me your comments on the strip, let me know how you're finding it. Is there anything about the strip or the website that I need to know about ? Leave me a comment here (encouragement will be appreciated too!) and let me know how you're doing!

NEWS!!!!
Big congratulations to Richard Fairgray as he has slipped over the Atlantic ocean to launch his comic Blastosaurus at this weekends Comic Con in San Diego USA! Richard had been self publishing to produce the comic on a monthly basis here in New Zealand (released through comics specialty stores and sold over trademe). However he had always intended to release it in North America through the awspices of Jeff Katz's "American Original" Company. Read more about it at 'From Earth's End' where Adrian Kinnaird has published an exclusive interview conducted with Richard shortly before the Blastosaurus creator left for the convention!

OFF TOPIC ART.
Lastly, thought I would share some work I've done for a friend who is making a short film. He should be almost finished shooting by the end of the weekend. I was asked to come up with boards for the fight scene. This is the second page in, the fight has already started and one guy is throttling the other.
I'll be posting a few more pages from this story board as we go along. I'll also include other pieces I've done that are not related to the Kiwimancomics site.

Thanks for your time! See you next post!

Matt.

Hey all!
The latest panel is up on the www.kiwimancomics.com web page!

It's a sad week in which we farewell Harvey Pekar, a gentle giant of independent comics.
Click the picture for a better view.
